Over the past ten years, the number of women travelling alone has increased dramatically. Data from the Solo Female Travellers Club shows that over the four years before to the COVID-19 outbreak, searches for the keyword “solo female travel” had multiplied six-fold. Once the pandemic was no longer a major concern in 2022, the volume of searches increased again.
However, safety is still a major concern even as more women travel alone. According to the 2022 Solo Female Travel Trends Survey, 66% of women who travel alone are concerned about their personal safety.
Such worries are addressed in a recent report from GeoSure Global and travel insurance provider Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection (BHTP). The research lists the top 11 cities and nations in the world for female solo travellers. And more often than any other nation, one in particular can be found among the top 11.
Western Europe and Scandinavia Dominate Ranking
Switzerland is by far the top nation in the overall BHTP ranking. In particular, Basel, Switzerland took the top rank for safest city in the world, followed by Bern, Switzerland, and Zurich, Switzerland, in that order.
Toronto, Ontario, at number two, and Lisbon, Portugal, at number five, are two additional locations that made the top 10. Sweden’s Orebro, Vasteras, and Uppsala tied for sixth place, with Stockholm coming in at number seven. Monaco, Salzburg and Innsbruck, Austria (tie), Pamplona and Oviedo, Spain (tie), and Cannes, France complete the list.
When releasing its ranking, BHTP said in a statement that women who are travelling alone and prioritise safety should consider Western Europe, Scandinavia, and Canada as these regions topped the list of safest cities and nations for women.
The supplier of travel insurance continued by saying that the inclusion of the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Canada, Sweden, and Switzerland in BHTP’s separate ranking of the Top 10 Safest Countries for Travel in General does not come as a surprise when it comes to the safest nations for women travelling alone.
